Yesterday, this election sign blew over a fence and into a construction site. I’m guessing that this morning you’ll see candidates tweeting about how so many of their signs were trashed by vandals last night.

During the last civic election I saw signs blow over, and the very next day I heard candidates blaming thugs who, I suppose, always struck downwind.
“But only XYZ’s signs were targeted!” goes the cry, not considering that their signs may have been put together differently. For example, this year I see that some parties use flexible wire bases and six points of fastening for their signs, while I see others using wide, thin, wooden stakes with two thin staples to hold rigid signs in place. One will bend like prairie grass, the other will try to fly like a kite.
Here’s the thing, you’re running for election telling me you know the town, you know my community, you know what it’s like to live here. Don’t forget, part of living here is knowing what the weather is like. It’s seriously one of the first things people talk about when they meet in the morning over coffee. If you’re oblivious to the little things, then you’re going to screw up the big things. Big things are made of lots of little things.
